Before I start this chapter review, I need to preface it with the fact that Daily 5 has been successful in my classroom mainly because I have been able to adapt it to my kindergarten students and their needs and behaviors. You can’t be afraid to do the same. Just because something doesn’t work, don’t ditch the whole philosophy! It's just like what we know about differentiated instruction . . . Assess, instruction, adjust! Each year that you do it, you will find ... VIEW POST

Do You Have Stamina? We Do!
It's never an easy feat when starting out Daily 5 training in a kindergarten classroom. This year we were able to accomplish 15 minutes of 'read to self' and it only took us until the 5th week of school to get it done. Whew! If you're a Daily 5-er, you know that once you make that 'read to self' goal, it means that your kiddos are ready to do it for real during D5 rotations. They know the expectations, they understand the urgency . . . they just 'get it.' And so what do you do when you ... VIEW POST
Chapter 3 and Time for a Freebie!
It's time for my reflections on Chapter 3! I love that we are getting into the nuts and bolts of D5 now. This is the putting it all together, getting organized and making it work . . . all starting to come together little by little. Daily 5-2nd Edition Chapter 7: Houston We Have Lift Off . . .and a FREEBIE
You’ve started Read To Self. You’re setting your foundation lessons and your kiddos are building stamina. So now what? We may build our read to self-stamina by practicing a couple of times a day, but since that only takes a small portion of our ELA block, in my kindergarten class, we are practicing and building a foundation in the other Daily 5 components during the rest of the time until our reading stamina goal is met. The first two weeks might look a bit like the ... VIEW POST
Setting Up For A Successful Year Of Daily 5 In Kindergarten
The beginning of the kindergarten year is such a blur. About halfway through it, you try to look back and figure out exactly how it all started. It gets difficult to remember the hard work and organization that it took to get your from there to where you are now, but by remembering the parts that went well and the parts that didn't, you can always improve each year. So I'm trying, desperately to make sure I document these first days of math stations and now Daily 5 Stations so I can adjust ... VIEW POST
